Hydraulic Governors for Engines

Hydraulic governors run on oil pressure to mechanically sense the speed of an engine and control fuel, creating engine speed consistency. Hydraulic governors can be used for virtually any type of engine, as well as other applications such as turbines and conveyor belts.

At Alberta Governor, we supply and service many Woodward hydraulic governor models. We are a Woodward Authorized Independent Service Facility, and can service governors sent to us at our Edmonton facility, or make service calls.

Woodward UG Governor

UG-5.7, UG-8, UG-10 Dial and lever.

The UG products are mechanical-hydraulic governors for controlling diesel, gas, or dual fuel engines, or steam turbines. The governor provides extremely reliable speed control throughout the drive speed and temperature range. This proven design has been the industry standard for many years and its worldwide acceptance provides easy service in most engine and governor shops.

UG-Dial governors are particularly suited for constant speed applications. Knob speed settings make synchronization easy for generator applications. Motor speed setting is available for remote synchronization. Adjustable droop makes load sharing between engines precise.

UG Lever governors are widely used for variable speed control. Remote speed setting can be either mechanical through the speed setting lever or pneumatic with a special speed setting device. Special attachments are available for other applications.

The UG pump is designed for applications which reverse engine rotation.

Woodward PSG Governor

Available in work ratings of 10.8 and 21.7 inch-pounds, the PSG governor is a pressure-compensated, speed-droop, or isochronous governor for controlling the speed of small diesel, gas, and gasoline engines, or small steam or industrial gas turbines. The governor is used to control engines or turbines driving alternators, DC generators, pumps, or compressors.

Woodward 3161 Governor

The 3161 governor is a mechanical-hydraulic device that senses speed to control dual fuel engines, diesel engines, or steam turbines. The variety of standard features and available options make the governor ideal for a wide variety of applications that require work capacity of up to 24 N-m (18 lb-ft). Applications include off-highway vehicles, industrial, marine, generator set, compressor, or pump drives.

3161 operation can be isochronous for accurate constant speed or frequency control, or droop for load sharing. The amount of droop may be changed internally or with an optional external lever.

  • Fuel limiting options

Woodward EGB-2P and EGB-1P Governor/Actuator

The EGB-1P and EGB-2P, like all EGB products, are proportional electro-hydraulic actuators with a mechanical backup governor. As such, they are particularly well-suited to engines operating in tandem to drive a common load. When paired with Woodward’s 2301 electronic control, a complete governing system is achievable.

Work capacity: 1 and 2 ft-lb (1.4 and 2.7 J)

Woodward EGB-10P, 13P, 35P Governor/Actuator

These EGB governor/actuators are used with Woodward analog or digital electronic controls that provide a proportional 20–160 mA signal to control dual fuel, diesel, and gasoline engines, and gas and steam turbines driving electrical or mechanical loads.

Work capacity: 10, 13, 35 ft-lb (14, 18, 48 J)

  • Single or parallel operation in droop or isochronous modes

Woodward PG Dial and Lever Governors

Woodward’s PG governors control speed of steam turbine applications including turbines driving pumps, compressors, generators, marine propulsion and paper machines. In addition to speed control, PG governors can also limit load and shut down the engine when the lubricating oil pressure fails. Woodward customizes each PG governor to meet the needs of the engine and the application.

Features include:

  • Lever or dial speed adjustment
  • Spring-driven, oil-damped ballhead that filters frequency torsional vibrations

Woodward PG12/PG12L Actuator

Woodward’s PG pressure-compensated governor line effectively controls the speed of the largest engines and turbines with work capacities ranging from 12 to 500 ft-lb (16 to 678 J).
